Which Ghost Cable Do I Need? A Guide by Job

Ghost Analog, Ghost Analog/Digital and Ghost Instrument cables, coiled

Ghost makes three cables, and each one is built for a different kind of signal. Find your job below and you will know which cable to order and which connector goes on each end.

The Three Cables

  • Ghost Analog: Balanced, ultra low capacitance cable for microphones and line-level gear. Black or gray jacket. Shop
  • Ghost Analog/Digital: True 110 ohm balanced cable for AES/EBU digital audio, and a slightly brighter choice on analog runs. Dark purple jacket. Shop
  • Ghost Instrument: Unbalanced, Hi-Z, ultra low capacitance cable for guitar, bass and keys. Matte military green jacket. Shop

Microphone to Preamp or Interface

Use Ghost Analog with an XLR female end and an XLR male end. The female end plugs into the microphone and the male end goes into the preamp. For most rooms 10 to 25 ft is plenty.

Outboard Gear and Racks

Short balanced runs between compressors, EQs and converters in the same rack. Use Ghost Analog XLR patch cables from 1 to 7 ft, or build a custom length down to 6 in.

Ghost Studio Patch Cable

Interface or Mixer to Studio Monitors

Check the jacks on both ends before you order. Outputs and monitor inputs can be XLR, 1/4 inch TRS or both, depending on the model.

Patchbays

Match the patchbay's jacks. A TRS patchbay takes Ghost Analog TRS to TRS, and an XLR panel takes XLR ends. Order a custom build if you need very short patches or a set of matching lengths with printed labels.

Guitar and Bass to the Amp

Use Ghost Instrument. A straight plug fits almost any jack. A right-angle plug at the guitar keeps the cable tucked against the body, and a silentPLUG at the guitar lets you unplug without a pop. Read how to choose instrument cable plugs.

Pedalboards

Short Ghost Instrument cables with right-angle plugs keep a board tidy. Custom instrument cables start at 6 in, so you can order each jumper to fit.

Keys and Synths

Look at the output jack. If the manual calls the outputs unbalanced, use Ghost Instrument. If they are balanced, use Ghost Analog with ends that match the jacks. Not sure? Read balanced vs unbalanced cables.

Converters, Clocks and Digital Gear

AES/EBU digital audio calls for a true 110 ohm cable. Use Ghost Analog/Digital with XLR ends.

Analog Runs Where You Want More Top End

Ghost Analog/Digital is fully balanced, so it works on analog runs too. There it has a subtle lift in the high frequencies and sounds a little brighter than Ghost Analog.

Long Runs and Whole Rooms

Custom Ghost Analog and Ghost Analog/Digital cables run up to 200 ft. For a studio build-out or a large order, email info@ghostcable.com with your list and we will quote it.

Plug It In the Right Way

Every Ghost cable is directional. Side A goes to the source and Side B goes to the destination, and the arrow on the cable points the way the signal travels. How to connect Side A and Side B.
