Straight, Right Angle or Silent: Choosing Instrument Cable Plugs

Ghost instrument cable with a red silent right-angle plug and a straight plug

Ghost Instrument cables come with Neutrik quarter-inch plugs in three styles. Here is how to pick the right one for each end.

Straight Plugs

A straight plug fits almost any jack and is the default for amps, interfaces and most guitars. If you are not sure, a straight plug is the safe choice.

Right Angle Plugs

A right-angle plug sits close to the body of whatever it is plugged into. At the guitar end it keeps the cable tucked against the instrument. At the other end it saves space on a pedalboard or keeps the cable flat against an amp.

Check your guitar before choosing one. Some jacks sit in a recessed cup or at an angle where a right-angle plug will not seat.

silentPLUG

The Neutrik silentPLUG mutes the signal as soon as it is pulled from the jack, so you can change guitars without a pop or buzz through the amp. It comes in straight and right-angle versions.

On a Ghost cable the silentPLUG always goes on Side A, the guitar end. That is the end you unplug when you swap instruments.

Common Combinations

  • Straight to Straight: The all-rounder.
  • 90 to Straight: Right angle at the guitar, straight at the amp.
  • Silent to 90: Silent plug at the guitar, right angle at the pedalboard.
  • Silent 90 to 90: Right angle at both ends, with the silent plug at the guitar.
